Teachers should be prioritized for vaccination, says Unicef

Teachers should be prioritized for vaccination against covid-19 for reopening schools and reducing education disruptions, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) said on Tuesday. The statement comes against the backdrop of countries the world over, including India, getting ready to roll out vaccines. Unicef is calling for teachers to be prioritized to receive the covid-19 vaccine, once frontline health personnel and high-risk populations are vaccinated. This will help protect teachers from the virus, allow them to teach in person, and ultimately keep schools open, it said. About 320 million students Worldwide were out of school as of the end of November, some 90 million more than in October, as regions and countries went for fresh closures because of a second wave of covid-19 cases.
